Southwest Academy Learning Center

Southwest Academy Learning Center is a multi-dimensional educational facility that is a private, non-profit school that specializes in learning different children aged pre-school to ninth grade. The center is also comprised of a nationally accredited Teacher Training facility that educates future and current dyslexic therapists. Additionally, Southwest Academy Learning Center offers a comprehensive Evaluation Center that screens children and adults for dyslexia and ADD/ADHD.

Our Philosophy

Our philosophy is that every student regardless of their learning difference can learn in a positive, caring environment. Our educational curriculum is based upon a multisensory teaching approach that utilizes all learning pathways (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic-tactile) simultaneously in order to enhance memory and learning.

Our Mission

The mission of Southwest Academy is to provide learning success to dyslexic, attention deficit disorder/attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and learning different students by encouraging participation, creativity, problem solving and enthusiasm in a stimulating, loving and emotionally safe environment. We have two goals: to teach children they are lovable and capable as well as be life long learners. Additionally, through our teacher training facility we want to teach educators and language arts therapists how to best teach children with learning differences.

Southwest Academy Learning Center was founded over 14 years ago with three children and at our current location has taught as many as 94 students; our goal is to increase our annual enrollment to 225 students. We currently employ 11 full-time and 12 part-time staff members ranging from administration, teachers and therapists.

We are proud of our years of success and look forward to many more. Children come to our facility whether for evaluation and testing or as students with disadvantages in reading, spelling, math or other academic subjects and some with moderate to extremely poor social skills. We have seen countless children arrive from the public school system feeling inadequate, like failures, frustrated and lost; viewed by the “system” as unable to learn or as disruptive. Therefore, left to survive on their own in an educational system that is not prepared or able to address their learning needs.

Southwest Academy’s unique teaching and learning approach has caught the attention of media; we have been featured in The Dallas Morning News, The Allen American and other educational trade journals. Dr. Beverly Dooley is a sought after lecturer and educator of educators as it relates to the understanding and skills required to teach learning different students, particularly those with dyslexia and ADD/ADHD. Our Teacher Training Center is one of only twelve such accredited training centers in the country that provides training for teachers of dyslexic and learning different students. We provide our services to children and teachers all over the Dallas Metro area.
